Jet Etiquette: A First-Timer’s Guide to Flying Private

Stepping onto a private jet for the first time is an exciting milestone — but for many new charter clients, it can also bring a few questions: How should I dress? Do I tip the crew? What’s expected of me?

At Sentinel Aviation, we make sure your flight is seamless from the moment you book, but here’s a quick guide to jet etiquette so you can board with confidence and enjoy every moment in the air.

1. Punctuality Still Matters

While one of the biggest perks of private aviation is flexibility, arriving on time is still a mark of good manners. Your crew is scheduled specifically for your journey, and arriving too early or too late can affect your experience. Always confirm your show time with our team.

2. Dress to Match the Occasion

There’s no formal dress code, but your outfit can set the tone. Business casual is common for most flights, though clients travelling for leisure often opt for comfortable yet smart attire. Ultimately, wear what feels appropriate for your journey and destination.

3. ID Still Required

Unlike commercial flights, private charters don’t involve long security queues — but you’ll still need to bring valid identification, especially for international routes. Our team will brief you in advance on any documentation you need.

4. Respect the Crew & Aircraft

Private jet crews offer impeccable service, but they’re also professionals with a job to do. A courteous attitude goes a long way. Also, avoid placing items on leather seats or polished tables — treat the aircraft with the same respect you’d give your host’s home.

5. Seating Is Flexible — But Not Random

In most private jets, there are no assigned seats, but etiquette suggests allowing the principal traveller (the one paying or hosting) to choose theirs first. If in doubt, ask or wait to be shown where to sit.

6. Tipping — Yes or No?

Tipping isn’t mandatory in private aviation, but it is appreciated, particularly if you’ve had excellent service. A general guideline depends on flight length and service level. If in doubt, we can advise you.

7. Phone Use & Behaviour Onboard

Feel free to use your phone and devices once onboard (unless instructed otherwise), but be mindful of volume and surroundings — especially on shared charters or with business associates.

8. Don’t Hesitate to Ask

At Sentinel Aviation, your experience is our priority. Whether it’s a question about Wi-Fi, catering preferences, or luggage, no request is too small. Our concierge-style service is built to anticipate your needs — and respond quickly when they change.
